The Vuelta a Espana (August 20 to September 11) could include a classic climb in 2016. Organizers Unipublic are working on a stage with finish at the top of the Lagos de Covadonga climb, a key place in the Spanish race as it has hosted a stage finish on 19 occasions since 1983, most recently in 2014.

With official confirmation still missing, the race is likely to reach Asturias on Sunday, August 28 in the ninth stage with a finish on the Alto del Naranco. Now the organizer Unipublic is looking into a finish at Lagos de Covadonga, according to reports in El Comercio , "after the climb of L'Angliru has been ruled out as an option."

Cangas de Onis made a formal request during this year's race. "We would like the organizers to consider the option of a time trial from the city to the Lagos de Covadonga," mayor González Castro told Nueve Espana.

Lagos de Covadonga last hosted a stage finish in 2014 when Przemyslaw Niemiec took the win and has featured in the Vuelta regularly since 1983. Marino Lejarreta, Pedro Delgado, Luis Herrera and Laurent Jalabert are among the winners.

Mirador de Ézaro, La Camperona and Naranco are the uphill finishes that are known for an edition that will start with five stages in Galicia and will include a time trial in Calpe in the last week.
