After taking banned asthma medication, Simon Yates of Orica-BikeExchange was ruled out of both the Dauphine and Tour de France. His twin brother Adam says an innocent rider has become a victim of a terrible mistake.
Yates confirmed his brother should have known what he was putting into his body, but the team doctor was the one who failed to apply for the TUE that would have made using the banned medication legal.
“He’s an innocent guy,” Adam told Cycling Weekly. “He’s had his career ruined by a simple mistake. I’m pretty devastated by that, but I’ve race without him before and I’m racing without him again, so it doesn’t change much.”
Adam says Simon has had his reputation permanently damaged and it will be very hard to correct.
“It was great when he was here last year and it’s a shame he’s not here this year, but that’s it,” Adam added. “It’s a shit situation with him, but what can you do about it? Someone fucked up and he’s had his reputation ruined for the rest of his life.”
