Andy Schleck will target stage wins at the Tour de France rather than the overall classification according to Trek manager Luca Guercilena- that is if his performances at the Tour de Suisse are good enough to earn him a spot on the roster.
Guercilena told Velochrono he expected Schleck to be good at the Tour of Luxembourg but he ended up finishing 15 minutes down on a relatively easy parcours against a weakened field.
"At the moment, he doesn’t have enough form to do a Grand Tour," said Guercilena. "This isn’t the situation we were hoping for at the start of the season but we have to deal with it. He still has the Tour of Switzerland where he can show he is competitive. That’s a real test."
"If Andy does a good Tour of Switzerland and comes to the Tour de France, it will be more with the aim of targeting stages than contending for the overall," said Guercilena. "Guys like Froome and Contador are a long way ahead of him."
Schleck was 20th overall in Paris last year and looked to be improving but he has not performed as well as his team would have hoped in 2014- he failed to finish any of his beloved Ardennes Classics and his 50th overall position in Luxembourg was the best stage race result he has achieved so far in 2014.
