On Sunday in Doha, Peter Sagan will attempt to become only the sixth rider in 83 editions of the World Road Race Championships to keep the rainbow jersey for one more year. The Slovakian had a strong year with great victories (Gent Wevelgem, Ronde van Vlaanderen, European Championships...), but he doesn't feel pressure at the start of the Worlds.
"It depends also on how is the stars in the space. One year is good and one year is bad, and this year, it was good. Because of the luck maybe. What do I have to lose?", he explained during his press conference according to Cyclingnews. A jorunalist suggested: "A rainbow jersey ?"
"Yeah, but I already have one," Sagan answered. "I don't have anything to lose. What pressure?"
According to the future Bora-Hansgrohe leader, he does not like very weel the extreme heat.
"I have to say I'm not very good performing in these kind of conditions. I don't know, maybe we can expect some rain," he said flippantly. "It's the same for everybody. If there's wind, we have to race with wind. If it's hot, we have to race with heat."
"A lot of riders have won it twice, some three. Another World Championships is not historical but that's why I'm here, to race and do my best. You have to stay in good shape but it's also a little bit a lottery on this kind of parcours."
