After suffering from an intestinal ailment that forced him out of the Giro del Trentino, his last race before his big goal at the giro d’Italia. Fabio Aru says he has made a full recovery and is raring to go in Italy a week tomorrow.
He says he feels much better, although the illness has cost him some form, which may see him struggle in the opening team time trial with his Astana squad.
“I’m finally starting to feel better after four difficult days last week. I felt pretty bad at first and struggled to train well but I’ve got two good training rides in my legs now and I’m feeling better,” Aru told Cyclingnews.
“It’s cost me some form, it affected my training schedule. I won’t be at my very best at the start of the Giro d’Italia but I should be okay. I’ve worked hard and I’m recovering the training I lost. I think I’ll be at 90 per cent of my best at the start of the Giro.”
After being accused of hiding a biological passport incident by Lotto-Soudal rider Greg Henderson, he says he isn’t interested in the rider’s apology and is going to take legal action against him.
"I’m not interested in seeing him or having his apology. To be honest I don’t even know him,” Aru told Cyclingnews.
“We’re working on legal action and we’ll definitely do it. He should have thought first before writing something. Apologising afterwards is too late. We all make mistakes but he should have thought about the consequences before slandering somebody like that. It hurt and I didn’t deserve it. There’s no truth to it all. I was ill for four days and I had to miss the Giro del Trentino. That’s all.”
