Zico Waeytens takes the second top-10 result for the team with a tenth in the second consecutive bunch sprint in the Amgen Tour of California. Mark Cavendish was the fastest on the line to take his eleventh win of the season.
Stage two was another sprinter-friendly stage that started on an altitude of 900m., to finish at sea level after 193.7km. Four riders formed the early break while it was a comfortable day for the riders in the bunch as the sprinter’s teams controlled the chase steadily.
As planned, the bunch gathered up the four with 4km to the finish. Again, Mark Cavendish was the fastest in the bunch sprint. Zico Waeytens continued his strong performance of yesterday with a tenth today.
Warren Barguil was involved in a crash that took place when entering the final 10km, he could finish the race but after the stage his injury proved to be worse than primarily expected. Team Giant-Alpecin will start the third day of racing at the Tour of California with six riders.
“Warren is suffering too much from the crash. He has seven deep cuts in his upper leg that he probably got from hitting a chain ring. His wounds had to be stitched, and at this point it is not possible for him to continue racing, as the risk of insufficient healing is too great,” explained the team’s physician in California, Anko Boelens.
Coach Aike Visbeek comments on the day’s stage: “Our plan was to go for Zico again. Before the bunch entered the local circuits, a big crash happened, Warren and Koen [de Kort] were among the victims. The lead-out for Zico was ruined because of this crash as they were too far behind for a podium finish today.”
