The local authorities of Bilbao are working to bring the Tour de France to the city but"not before 2019". The Basque city is considering an investment that will hopefully create a return from 10 to 12 times the investment as specified by the provincial deputy for economic and territorial development, Imanol Pradales.
The various institutions would like to have a stage finish or stage stat but it is possible that they could also be a candidate for the Grand Départ as reported by esciclismo. The Tour de France is a sporting event of a level which would occupy as much as 55% of the hotel capacity in the city.
Prades has confirmed that negotiations with the ASO continued at the recent presentation of the Tour de France and that "the Basque institutions will continue to work hard and in silence" to achieve this goal. However, the 2019 edition is the earliest option since the 2017 edition is finalized and the 2018 edition is already being planned.
