American riders Peter Stetina and Taylor Phinney misses BMC Racing Team a lot, but the World Tour team hopes to see them in the peloton before the end of the season. General manager Jim Ochowicz is confident about their return to racing.
“It’s closer, because they’re healing, and they’re training, but we cannot say when that will be yet,” Ochowicz told VeloNews. “They’re not cleared to race yet by our medical staff. I can’t say when that will be. I can’t see how he wouldn’t race this year. Where that would be, I just don’t know yet,” Ochowicz said of Stetina. “And Taylor? The same thing. We hope to see him racing this year, yes. From a medical standpoint, it seems to be more complicated. We’re hopeful.”
Phinney had fallen heavily last year during the US national road championships in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He required surgery after suffering a compound fracture to his tibia and a severed patellar tendon. Stetina is suffering broken ribs, tibia and patella in a bad crash during stage one of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco.
