BMC Racing Team's Tejay van Garderen (pictured) notched his third top 10 finish Saturday at Volta a Catalunya after being part of the breakaway while teammate Darwin Atapuma remained seventh overall.
Van Garderen was part of a 21-man group that got away early in the 194.1-kilometer race. With the breakaway's lead at four minutes with 22 km to go, van Garderen put in an attack which reduced the group to 12. He finished sixth as Sergei Chertnetski (Team Katusha) stole the win from Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quick Step) in a photo finish.
Atapuma finished in the peloton 1:50 later and is 33 seconds off the overall lead of Richie Porte (Team Sky) with one day to go.
"Tomorrow is a hard, hard stage," BMC Racing Team Sport Director Yvon Ledanois said to the BMC website. "We go up the climb of the Montjuïc eight times. Darwin has good morale and good legs. I have confidence in him and the entire team for tomorrow."
Van Garderen's finish helped the BMC Racing Team take the lead in the team classification ahead of Team Sky.
