Ahead of Rohan Dennis’ Hour Record attempt later today, current holder Matthias Brandle of IAM says he is resigned to losing the record.
“I’ve already had it for three months, so I was not worried about losing it to Jack, and won’t be tomorrow,” he said to Cyclingnews before the Tour of Qatar.
“Just like I took the record from Jens [Voigt], I know somebody will take it from me. I cross my fingers for Rohan that everything goes well for him.”
Dennis has to go further than 51.852km if he wants to take Brandle’s record from him. Even if Dennis fails, Brandle knows he ahs to face Thomas Dekker and Bradley Wiggins, both of whom have attempts coming later this year. Tony Martin also has said he is interested, but may not attempt it until 2016.
The Austrian is currently riding the Tour of Qatar and he said that while he wasn’t in his best shape at the time, he thinks people underestimate how hard it is to go 52km/h for the Hour.
“I wasn’t in the best shape when I did my ride, but I think some people underestimate the record. Some people think it’s easy to ride 52 kilometres,” added Brändle.
Being the record holder has changed his life as more people recognize him and know who he is now.
“It has changed my life a lot. A lot more people know me in my country, I have a bigger profile I think. As a sportsman, you live a lot off your profile.”
