As he is no longer able to test himself against Eddy Merckx, Fabian Cancellara is no longer motivated by the Hour Record. He has still no concrete plans about making an attempt in 2015.
After the rule changes that allows the use of modern equipment, Fabian Cancellars (Trek) has "somewhat lost the motivation" for an Hour Record attempt.
The Swiss says in an interview with local newspaper Tagesanzeiger that he was motivated by comparing himself to Eddy Merckx on the track in Mexico City. On the velodrome in the Mexican capital, The Belgian set a best mark of 49.431km on a normal road bike that was only beaten by Chris Boardman 28 years later.
"That is still on my mind, to be honest," Cancellara said about Mercx's record. "But now I have to ride against new record holder Matthias Brändle. That is another kind of motivation than to ride against a legend like Mercx."
Having already announced his plan to attack the Hour Record in 2014, the 33-year-old refuses to choose a new date. "I can not give an answer to that question," Cancellara said when asked about a possible attempt in 2015.
