Damiano Caruso will lead Cannondale in the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco which starts on Monday. Having shown improving condition recently, the Italian is targeting a top result as he is focusing on stage races in the early part of his season.

Cannondale Pro Cycling continues to cut through Spain. The Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco, which takes place April 7 - 12, is the team's second Spanish race following the Volta a Catalunya. The six stage race and ninth UCI World Tour event, is a key moment during the spring season. The challenging routes and its high level of the competition can act as a springboard after a long winter.

Cannondale Pro Cycling team captain Damiano Caruso will lead the Green Machine in the Basque county. During the Settimana Internazionale, his last race, Caruso showed strength, good condition, and a high level of competitiveness placing fifth overall and third at stage 1 and fourth at stage 4.

"I'm happy for what I did and for the improvement I had in March," said Caruso. "I started Paris-Nice in not perfect condition, due to fever, but I finished well. At Settimana Internazionale, I felt good, but I know I can keep growing."

The Vuelta al Pais Vasco won't be Caruso's preparation for the Ardennes' Classics. The rider has decided not to race the Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege in order to focus on key stage races such as the Tour de Romandie.

"I discussed my decision with team management, and together we thought this the best option. Stage races are most suited to my riding characteristic. I am able to be more competitive than I would during a one-day race," added Caruso.

In addition to Caruso, the Cannondale Pro Cycling selection for Spain includes Daniele Ratto, who will be the team's sprinter, as well as Josè Sarmiento, Cristiano Salerno, Jean-Marc Marino, and the promising young guns Davide Villella, Michel Koch, and Alberto Bettiol. Directors Dario Mariuzzo and Biagio Conte will be on-site to lead the team.
