Cobo joins Torku Konya Sekerspor
2011 Vuelta a Espana winner Juan Jose Cobo, signs with Turkish-based team Torku Konya Sekerspor, per Biciclismo.
Cobo failed to gain a contract from Movistar team, as expected. He didn't perform at all during the two years within the Spanish team, failing to get a single victory. As a result, Cobo has to accept a downgrade to Continental level. "It was difficult to find a place in the World Tour squad so I started looking for the possibility of minor teams, " Cobo confirms, " Here comes the option of Torku team, thanks to David de la Fuente who put me in touch with them. They asked me at the Tour of Turkey although until the end of the season I had not seriously thought about it. Given the circumstances, I am very satisfied to keep cycling." De la Fuente, a fellow spanish rider at Torku Konya team, did play a significant role in the former Vuelta winner's decision to join.
Torku Konya Sekerspor is perhaps most famously known as producing the Tour of Turkey "winners" of the last two years. However, both of the riders, Gabrovski in 2012 and Sayar in 2013, tested positive for EPO and lost their results. Other than that, the Turkish team did have pretty good result in Chinese races, with fellow Spanish rider de la Fuente winning a Tour of Qinghai Lake stage this year, and Ukrainian sprinter Metlushenko winning Tour of Taihu Lake GC.
On his next season, Cobo still hasn't a clear objective list. "I am available to the team. You can guess Tour of Turkey will be my main objective, and you can wait the answer." he adds.
