Contador’s contract with Tinkoff ends this year as the team is set to fold. Contador rode for the team Tinkoff/Saxo Bank for the last six years.
According to Cycling Weekly Contador will team up with long-time domestique Jesús Hernández, sports director Stephen De Jongh and mechanic Faustino Muñoz Cambron. Former cyclist and Tinkoff’s new sports director, Ivan Basso might also join the American WorldTour team managed by Italian Luca Guercilena.
Guercilena declined to comment on the existence of an agreement with Contador since UCI rules would prohibit him to do so as riders may not officially sign rider for the new season until August 1.
Contador and his agent, his brother Francisco, allegedly pushed for a two-year deal with Trek-Segafredo, but sources say the team only offered him a one-year contract because of his age (33).
Contador, whose contract value remains unknown, is currently riding in the Tour de France, where is he positioned in 25th place overall after six stages. It is expected that the Spaniard will pull in around €2 to €3 million in what could be his final season.
