Mário Costa will do his best to be competitive and a useful rider for Lampre-Merida in 2015. The Portuguese will make the jump from the continental level in his home country to the WorldTour and he faces the challenge with confidence.
At 29 years of age, Mario Costa has earned himself the chance to race with his brother Rui. "It was hard for me to believe that one day I would be riding the biggest races in the world. I have trained with my brother and watched him on televission but to ride alongside him in major competitions is a feeling that is hard to describe," he told the sports daily A Bolad.
Costa already knows when and where he will race in the first part of the season. "I will start in Qatar, followed by Paris-Nice, Volta a Catalunya and Vuelta al Pais Vasco and then I will end that part of the season in Romandie. From there, it depends on how I respond to the demands of the team. My mission is to work and help my brother and the rest of the team leaders," he said.
To be fully dedicated, he has had to skip his job at the Orteonatura clinic in Póvoa de Varzim. "To competing at the forefront of world cycling, I will have to make many sacrifices, but I'm ready. I couldn't do it any differently because it was impossible to do both. In a team like Lampre-Merida, I have to be prepared to give my maximum. And I will wait to the first race and test on the road to see where I can get," he said.
