On Tuesday, the official figures of the Giro d'Italia starts in Apeldoorn were presented. From an economic point of view, he hosting of the first stages yielded less than previously thought. The spin-off was 8.4 million while 11.3 million was expected.
Shortly after the race, the organizers estimated that 575,000 spectators visited the first three stages. That number has now been reduced significantly, Algemeen Dagblad reports. According to official figures, there were 482,500 visitors, but it is still more than the 460,000 which was the hop prior to the event. The organizers closed the books with a deficit of € 365,000.
The deficit is due to the fact that local business has put a lot less money into the event than expected. To cover the costs, Gelderland will pay ax extra € 250,000 while the cities of Apeldoorn, Arnhem and Nijmegen each pay € 36,500. Deputy Jan Markink is mostly positive.
"We had a great time. There were 482,000 visitors who got a free look at this major event. I am very proud of that," he says.
