Tom Dumoulin has finished his cycling season with a prize. The Dutchman was given the Fair Play Award in Abu Dhabi at the first edition of the UCI Cycling Gala.
The 24-year-old Dumoulin stunned the world during the Vuelta where he lost the red jersey on the penultimate stage after having won two stages. He ended the race in sixth.
Furthermore, Dumoulin didboth the time trial and the road race at the World Championships and was the best Dutchman in both races. He also won both time trials at the Tour de Suisse.
Dumoulin's Giant-Alpecin team also received a prize. The squad was hailed as the most media-friendly. "The fans and the press should never be neglected," said team manager Iwan Spekenbrink.
During the UCI gala in Abu Dhabi, many protagonists of the season were honoured, including world champion Peter Sagan and the winners of the three Grand Tours: Alberto Contador (Giro), Chris Froome (Tour) and Fabio Aru (Vuelta).
Alejandro Valverde received an award as number one in the WorldTour rankings. The new holders of the Hour Record, Bradley Wiggins and Molly Shaffer Houweling, also received awards.
