Hubert Dupont (AG2R La Mondiale was a part) of the breakaway on the 15th stage of the Giro d'Italia, the last before the penultimate rest day of the Italian Grand Tour. The breakaway lasted until 14 km to go and the last standing from the break was Dupont.
The peloton never fully let go of the breakaway, which in the end meant that Dupont was reeled in with 14 km to go. The stage then turned into a battle between the GC contenders. The victory was taken by the luxury helper of Aru, Mikel Landa followed up by Yury Trofimov of Katusha and maglia rosa Alberto Contador.
"The stage was very fast (48.5km in the first hour)," he said. "It was not easy. There were forty kilometers without difficulties. At the foot of the first climb, I tried to get away. The pace was very fast. I waited until the right time. I was behind but managed to return with Matteo (Montaguti). The presence of a rider who was 5 minutes behind in the overall disrupted the smooth cooperation in the breakaway. It was at around four minutes but never more because of this dangerous rider [Giovanni Visconti]. As a result, the peloton did not let us to go too far away. Today, after two complicated weeks, I enjoyed myself. I was at the limit of what I could do. I'm really happy with my day, it reassures me. I was the last to resist until the bottom of Madonna Di Campiglio, I had nothing to lose. When I was caught, I did not sit up and I was able to finish at a good pace. Tomorrow is a day of rest. We'll see what will heppen in the last week. If I can join the breakaways, there are things to do.”
