Frank Schleck (Trek) has taken his first win since coming back from suspension by claiming his fifth road race championships. Having escaped with Ben Gastauer (Ag2r) and his brother Andy in the finale, he attacked his companions to take a solo victory in a dominant Trek showing that saw the team place four riders in the top 5.
Frank Schleck has finally returned to his winning ways after what has been a testing comeback from a doping suspension. He did so in today's Luxembourgish road race championships when he took his fifth title, his first since 2011.
Trek lined up four riders in the race and they completely dominated the event. In the finale, three riders escaped and the American team had both the Schleck brothers in the move.
They were up against Ben Gastauer but the Ag2r rider had no chance to outwit the two family members. Frank made the right attack and held off his chasers while Gastauer beat Andy in the sprint for second. Impressively, the remaining two Trek riders, defending champion Bob Jungels and time trial champion Laurent Didier completed the podium.
Schleck will wear the jersey for the first time when he lines up as Trek leader for the Tour de France.
Result:
1. Frank Schleck 3.39.30
2. Ben Gastauer +0.05
3. Andy Schleck +0.07
4. Bob Jungels +1.28
5. Laurent Didier
