“I talked with James (Vanlandschoot) and we agreed to stay together. He was on my wheel so I could help him in the sprint. But when we were out of the risky zone I found myself on the wheel of Greipel.”

In the first road stage of the five-day Tour de Luxembourg, Wanty-Groupe Gobert showed themselves well. Enrico Gasparotto sprinted to a second place, behind the unbeatable André Greipel. Tom Devriendt was part of the day's breakaway and took the mountain jersey.

“We would try and get someone in the break if it were more than five riders. It was a group of six and Tom easily found his place in it. He did that very well, took the mountain jersey but also made sure he would drop back to the peloton when there was nothing left to gain in the breakaway. He took some bottles along the way and worked for the team. A very professional attitude," sports director Hilaire Van Der Schueren commented.

Devriendt himself was also content with his first leader's jersey in the pro ranks.

"It wasn't really my job to be in the breakaway but they didn't race for it. I jumped along. I knew there was only one jersey up for grabs today and that was the mountain jersey. That's what I worked hard for," Tom explained.

Of the available 24 points, Devriendt took 22.

“But tomorrow another nine hills await which means I could lose the jersey again. I want to see how the next days pan out and try my best to keep the jersey."

On the local laps Devriendt got himself dropped from the break while the sprint was prepared. Cofidis (with Adrien Petit) and Lotto-Soudal (for André Greipel) worked at the front of the bunch but also Wanty-Groupe Gobert made sure they stayed together.

"Most of all I didn't want to take any risks, avoid any crashes," Enrico Gasparotto explained. “I talked with James (Vanlandschoot) and we agreed to stay together. He was on my wheel so I could help him in the sprint. But when we were out of the risky zone I found myself on the wheel of Greipel.”

Gasparotto sprinted to a second place, took six bonus seconds and is now sixth in the overall classification.

"This was the best I could achieve today. I feel happy, motivated and will see day by day how this race pans out," the Italian concluded.
