Fernando Gaviria was the sensation of the Tour de San Luis where he won two stages despite being up against Mark Cavendish, and several WorldTour teams were quick to show their interest in the enormous potential of the 20-year-old Colombian. Today it seems that Etixx-QuickStep have won the battle.
Etixx-QuickStep have reacted quickly to sign Fernando Gaviria as an addition to a roster that already includes Mark Cavendish, Tom Boonen, Rigoberto Uran and Michal Kwiatkowski, according to a report in Biciciclismo. The parties will finalize the details at the Track World Championships which will be held in Paris on February 18-22. Hence, Patrick Lefevere has ensured new value to his extraordinary block. Nothing has been revealed yet but in principle he will join the Belgian formation in 2016 as he wants to finish the season with Colombia-Coldeportes and focus on the Tour de l'Avenir and U23 World Championships in Richmond.
However, things may not have been decided yet.
"We had several contacts," his agent Giuseppe Acquadro told Tuttobiciweb yesterday. "And now the choice is restricted to just two teams, one French and one Belgian, both from the WorldTour. In just a few days, a dozen at most, we will complete make a decision and then you will know everything."
The French team is reported to be Ag2r-La Mondiale.
Gaviria was a double junior world champion on the track in 2012, and in 2013 and 2014 he won titles at the Panamerican Games. Last year he did the Tour de l'Avenir where he lost out on the points jersey by a single point and he was 20th at the U23 Worlds.
In San Luis, he caused a stir when he beat Cavendish in the first stage in Villa Mercedes. His confirmation cames two days later in Juana Koslay where he again beat the Brit. In the final stage, the Etixx rider got his revenge as Gaviria had to settle for second.
