Having abandoned the Vuelta a Espana due to personal matters, Robert Gesink has decied to put an end to his season. Initially set to ride Il Lombardia and the Tour of Beijing, the Dutchman will focus on his family in the near future.
The season of team leader Robert Gesink has come to an end. The GC rider of the Belkin Pro Cycling TEAM already told the coach of the national team he would not be available for the World Championships. After the Vuelta a España he would ride the Tour de Lombardia as well as the Tour of Beijing. Gesink left the Vuelta due to private circumstances. He has made the decision to be with his family in the Netherlands.
"I won’t be doing any races for the team this season. A real pity to end the 2014 season like this. I was full of confidence and in a good shape, but my family needs me the most right now", said Robert Gesink
"We really wanted to see Robert in action in the World Championships in Ponferrada. In the Tour of Lombardia and Beijing he would have been one of our main leaders. Of course we will miss his strong performance in these races, but we fully support his decision in this difficult time”, said Managing Director Richard Plugge. "2014 has not been an easy year for Robert, but he has shown great form again in the Vuelta”.
