For the second day in a row, Chad Haga was part of a large breakaway group as Italian Formolo won the spectacular fourth stage in the Giro.
It was a demanding stage with relentless climbing, and attacks kept on going during a very chaotic and spectacular day, 29 riders formed the breakaway, again Haga was included.
On the toughest climb of the day, the Passo del Termine, Astana Pro Team thinned-out the bunch until only 20 riders were left. With this efforts the members of the breakaway were caught one by one.
With a well-timed attack just before the foot of the final ascent, Davide Formolo (Team Cannondale- Garmin) was the only one from the initial breakaway group to stay ahead of the group of favorites to win the stage. Second in the stage today, Simon Clarke is the new leader in the GC. Haga came in at 28th, after following the leading group until the second climb. The others of Team Giant-Alpecin spend their day in the grupetto.
Coach Adriaan Helmantel after the stage said: "It was another hard day. Chad did a strong ride in the breakaway and survived for a long time. At the second registered climb he was dropped from the leading group and was caught back by the reduced bunch. He could hang on until the final climb as the pace again was too high because of the GC action that took place there. For the other guys it was a day of survival but they all came in on time."
