Stage three takes the riders into the Italian hinterland, for a short and hilly stage of 136 kilometres. There are only two official climbs in the road book, but the first 92.5 kilometres it goes up and down all the time. From the top of the last climb it goes downwards to finish town Sestri Levante. A stage for birthday boy Adam Hansen?
“If this stage would have been scheduled in the third week, I immediately would have said ‘yes’. But at this point in the race all riders are really close to each other in GC. Orica-GreenEdge will definitely want to hang on to the pink jersey, so one of their riders have to end in front. It’s hard to predict if that will be with a breakaway or with a sprint of a reduced peloton. I’m curious how many riders will try to escape in the beginning and if Orica-GreenEdge can limit the advantage without blowing up their team. On the top of the last climb it will become clear which scenarios are still possible.”
The mother of Hansen is Italian. Does that make the Giro special to him? “I like the Giro anyway. As a kid I often visited the country and my cousins still live here.”
