Newly crowned ITT World Champion, Bradley Wiggins, revealed that he will try to break the Hour Record recently set by Jens Voigt next year. The 34-year old Briton admitted that he could make his attempt just after returning from Ponferrada, but needs a big goal for the next season as a source of motivation during the winter break.
Wiggins admitted that he was surprised by Voigt’s decision to finish his career with the Hour Record attempt, but was full of praise for the renowned German and his positive influence on the discipline.
"I was a bit surprised by Jens's decision to do it but what he did was fantastic and fully deserved,” Wiggins told BBC.
"It was encouraging Jens went so fast. It set a marker, and it was good for the sport," added Wiggins.
"Someone had to do it first and now it's a realistic aim... not like the record Chris Boardman set 14 years ago!"
The 34-year old Briton revealed that he will try to best Voigt’s result next June, as he needs it as a source of motivation to keep himself going throughout the winter break.
"I want to prepare for it properly," he said. "It will give me something to get out of bed for in the winter."
"I want to have a go at the one hour record next year after what Jens did last week," said Wiggins.
"I could just go and do it next week but if I do it, I'll only do it once."
Former Tour de France champion also commented on his other goals for the upcoming seasons, confirming that he will certainly focus on the track. Wiggins stated that he will still feature in some road events in the Team Sky outfit, but mainly to support his preparations for Olympic Games in Rio.
"I'm definitely going back to the track. That's not changed and whatever I do will be to support that," he said.
"I think the Tour de France is probably out the window, and the world time trial, because of the demands and trying to change your body shape. It's very different for four-minute efforts and one hour."
