Today Gianni Savio, Bruno Reverberi and Angelo Citracca appeared before the Italian Olympic Committee CONI to explain their involvement in the contract scandal in Italy. The prosecutor considers the three guilty in letting riders pay for their own contract which is against the rules of the UCI which follows the case with particular interest.
In the beginning of the afternoon, the team managers of Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec (Savio), Bardiani-CSF (Reverberi) and Wilier Triestina-Southeast (Citracca) were told what kind of punishment the prosecutor is asking for. A one-year suspension hangs over Citracca’s head, Savio faces a possible sentence of eighteen months while Reverberi could be out for two years.
All three ProContinental teams will also receive a reprimand and a fine of 5,000 euros. Furthermore, the prosecutor asked for a suspension of three months for Trek Segafredo rider Marco Coledan. He has reportedly paid Bardiani-CSF to be a professional between 2012 and 2014. Coledan has always denied those allegations. Elia Viviani is a key witness in the case.
According to Cycling Pro which is present at the criminal hearing, there was a heated discussion between the prosecutor and Reverberi. The latter wondered how it was at the Japanese-Italian at Nippo-Vini Fantini team. He also questioned the presence Al-Saadi al-Qadhafi, son of dictator Muammar Gaddafi, in the Italian professional football world.
The ruling is expected later today.
