In 2015, LottoNL-Jumbo will more often go with a team of young talents and attackers than it was the case at Belkin.
"We have a smaller budget and that means a different reality," explains team manager Merijn Zeeman to NU.nl. "We are very pleased with the continuity that we have but we have been unable to keep all of our top riders."
Big names like Bauke Mollema and Lars Boom will ride for foreign teams and instead Lotto-Belisol have signed young talents that will make their debut at the highest level.
"It's another project as it is now a real Dutch team that wants to guide young riders to the world elite."
The change means that LottoNL-Jumbo will more likely choose a different tactic.
"We still have a team at the top level but now we can no longer bring an absolute absolute leader every week. If we still had Mollema and Boom, we would be able to have a clear top rider in each WorldTour race. Now there will be a grand tour where we will start with a focus on development and stage wins."
With Robert Gesink, Wilco Kelderman, Laurens ten Dam and Steven Kruijswijk LottoNL-Jumbo has four riders who have already proven themselves in the GC of the grand tours.
"They will be the main riders together alongside Moreno Hofland and Sep Vanmarcke who have developed very well. With guys like Mike Teunissen and Timo Roosen, we take the challenge to bring them into the world elite."
Zeeman is particularly happy that the future of cycling is guaranteed by the agreements with Lotto and Jumbo.
"This year a lot has been happening. The withdrawal of Belkin as main sponsor brought about lots of turmoil. It took a lot of energy to keep the team together. In that sense, it was a learning year. Fortunately, it gives new energy to make new plans for this team."
According to Zeeman, the team can benefit from the cooperation with the skaters of LottoNL-Jumbo.
"This reinforces our plans to guide young riders to the top. This weekend the Ducth championships take place and some of our guys will be there to watch and try to help them. Nevertheless, the program that we offer to our athletes will be the same as we have had for the past two years."
