A mass pile-up in the final 30 kilometers of stage five in the Tour de San Luis, finishing at Juana Koslay, ruined what had been a calm day for the Movistar Team until that point.
The squad directed by José Luis Jaimerena crashed almost as a whole due to a crack in the pavement while leading the field, an incident which affected Nairo Quintana - quickly back on his bike and to the main peloton -, Dani Moreno and Marc Soler, and which forced Adriano Malori to abandon and be transferred to a medical center nearby.
The Hospital of San Luis, in agreement with the Movistar Team's medical staff, published a bulletin on the status of Adriano Malori. He will stay in intensive care for 48 hours due to a traumatic brain injury and also sustained a fracture to his right-hand collarbone as a result of the crash. A bulletin with precise, reliable informations will be released on Saturday.
As Germán Tivani (ARG) took the day's honours via a four-man breakaway, Soler and Moreno were able to reach the finish line: the Catalan had bruises all over his body, as it was the case for Quintana's left-hand side, while the Madrilian had pain in his back after jumping off his bike.
After the stage, Dayer and Nairo Quintana sit in second and fourth overall behind Eduardo Sepúlveda (FVC). The race showdown will be held on Saturday's stage six towards the Filo Sierras Comechingones (16.6km, 7% avg.), 2,140m above sea level, which will end a 160km route starting at La Toma.
