According to Italian media Astana’s captain Vincenzo Nibali will most likely participate in this year’s Milano-Sanremo edition despite the route change favoring the sprinters, while Andrea Guardini will replace Michele Scarponi in the Kazakh team’s roster for the first spring’s monument.
The decision announced by sports director Guiseppe Martinelli still has to be ultimately confirmed by Astana’s manager Alexandre Vinokourov but a veto from the Olympic gold medalist is rather unlikely. Thus, Nibali will have an opportunity to race in the event which is reportedly very close to his heart and to clock more kilometers in order to improve his still unsatisfying disposition.
However, the sprinters-friendly route of La Primavera effectively discouraged Michele Scarponi from participating in the event and former Giro d’Italia champion will be replaced by Guardini. This way the 24-year old sprinter will be provided with a chance to debut in Milano-Sanremo what may prove to be his first and last chance to take part in the monument considering the planned changes in its route.
