Early in the season, organizers of Belgian cyclo-cross races reported a decline in the number of spectators. In Belgium, the prices to attend cross race are usually between € 10 and € 15. After Sven Nys’s retirement, there was a big fear that the public's enthusiasm would drop and the decline showed that this fear was well-founded. However, the Golazo company, organizer of the Superprestige and DVV Verzekeringen Trofee series, now want to deny that trend, at least when it comes to the latter series.
In all three DVV Verzekeringen Trofee races this year – the race in Ronse, the Koppenbergcross and the Flandriencross Hamme, there were 1,000 additional entries, reveals Christophe Impens, CEO of Golazo Sport. But it is mainly the TV audiences that belie any effect of a crisis, with a net increase in the number of viewers and market shares.
- Ronse: 583,661 viewers, a share of 58% (in 2015: 378,588 viewers for a 47% share).
- Koppenbergcross: 727,013 viewers, a share of 65.2% (in 2015: 515,880 for a 60% share).
- Flandriencross in Hamme: 588,193 viewers, a share of 55%, peaking at 780,000 viewers in the last fifteen minutes (in 2015: 654,107 viewers for a 47% share)
