In his last professional season Fränk Schleck (Trek-Segafredo) once again delivered consistent performances. However, the 36,-year-old was no longer able to deliver a great result after he returned to the spotlight with a stage win at the Vuelta a Espana in 2015.
The third place in the Luxembourg road championships which he won in 2014, was his best result. In the stage races Schleck delivered solid performances like 14th in the Volta ao Algarve, 19th in the Tour de Suisse and 24th at the Tour de France. This was followed by his 20th place in the Rio Olympic race and 29th place at Il Lombardia, his farewell race on the bike.
In the spring, nothing went according to plan for the climber. After a crash at Flèche Wallonne, Schleck suffered a triple fracture of the clavicle and had to take a long break before his start at the Tour de France, after he had previously crashed heavily at Paris-Nice. "I was extremely disappointed that I missed Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and the crash was mentally and physically very difficult to handle. My first crash at Paris-Nice was also hard, but not so serious,” he told Radsport-News.com.
After 15 years, the third placed rider at the 2011 Tour de France decided to hang up his bike at the end of the year - two years after his younger brother Andy had finished his career. "The decision was not easy for me and I did not take it quickly. Now I need a new challenge, even though I first want to get some distance to the sport," said the father of two children who has not revealed his plans for the future.
