After taking yesterday’s summit finish and race lead at the Tour of Turkey, it was revealed that Davide Rebellin would not ride his home Grand Tour, the Giro, for CC Sprandi Polkowice.
“I won’t be doing the Giro,” Rebellin said ahead of the Tour of Turkey. “I would have wanted to do it, but the team decided against it.”
The 43 year old was an ex–doper and some were suggesting his team were told by prganisers RCS that they wouldn’t be given an invite to the race is they took the Italian, it remains to be seen if their other ex-doper Stefan Schumacher is allowed to ride. RCS deny that any of these talks took place.
“I’d never say that they can’t come or that I don’t want them, but I’d like to have a Giro start without riders who stir controversy,” RCS race director Mauro Vegni said.
“The team is going to make the choice. If they do bring them, then there’s controversy, and I’d like the Giro under clear skies.”
