Team Novo Nordisk’s Javier Megias finished in the front group at Wednesday’s Brabantse Pijl, the team’s only Belgian Classic of the season.

The 205.4-kilometer race saw attacks from the start, but it took nearly 70 km for a three-man break to form. Anthony Delaplace (Bretagne Séché Environnement), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) and Alex Kirsch (CULT Energy Pro Cycling) gained over three minutes on the peloton before Kirsch was dropped from the group. The remaining riders were caught with 37 km to go from the finish. New attacks immediately followed, yet it was the move by Ben Hermans (BMC Racing Team) that proved decisive. He held on until the finish in Overijse with Hermans taking the win. Team Novo Nordisk’s Javier Megias finished in 16th place, just seconds behind Hermans.

“I felt strong throughout the day and had David Lozano helping me all the way to the finish,” Megias said. “The short, steep climbs on the finishing laps don’t really suit my skills. I like something a little longer, but I’m happy with my form and am looking forward to see how I race in the upcoming Tour of Turkey.”

Ben Hermans (BMC Racing Team) took the win two seconds ahead of Michael Matthews (Orica GreenEDGE). Philippe Gilbert (BMC Racing Team) rounded out the podium.

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes pro cycling team, returns to racing on Sunday at Tro-Bro Léon. The 204.4-km race is known for its 25 dirt road sectors as it runs through the Brittany region of France.
