With Mark Cavendish, Tony Martin, Michal Kwiatkowski and maybe Rigoberto Uran, Omega Pharma-Quick Step have lots of different objectives in the Tour de France. Having focused on the GC in 2013 and 2014, world champion Kwiatkowski may be asked to focus on stage wins before he takes a look at the overall standings.
Omega Pharma-Quick Step hope to take the yellow jersey on the first day of the 2015 Tour de France, with Tony Martin being the big favourite for the time trial.
"He is one of the main contenders," Omega Pharma-Quick Step Wilfried Peeters told Sporza. "A time trial of 14km is already better for him than a prologue. It is also a quite spectacular first week. The cobbles and the will will be a role."
After the opening time trial, the Belgian team will focus on stage wins with Mark Cavendish in the first week. This year the team also had GC ambitions with Michal Kwiatkowski but the Pole was unable to follow the best in the mountains.
Hence, the new world champion may go into the race with different obejctives.
"We have to decide on that," Peeters said when asked about Kwiatkowski's role. "Perhaps he should first got for a stage win and only look at the GC later on. Before the Worlds, we had decided not to put any pressure on him as he needs time to get to know his body a bit better."
This year Tom Boonen decided not to do the Tour. However, the Belgian public still hopes to see their hero back in the biggest race of the world.
"Last year we doubted for a long time before we made a decision. He should prepare for his most important races: the classics," Peeters emphasizes.
