Klaas Vantornout and Kevin Pauwels played the team game perfectly to take a 1-2 for Sunweb-Napoleon Games in the Superprestige race in Asper-Gavere. After the race, Pauwels revealed that he had deliberately let his teammate go.
When Klaas Vantornout made his decisive attack in the finale of the Superprestige race in Asper-Gavere, his teammate Kevin Pauwels stilll had the legs. However, it was up to the final rider in the group, Tom Meeusen, to close the gap. When it became clear that Vantornout would stay away, Kevin Pauwels rode away to take second.
"When Vantornout went, I deliberately left a gap," Pauwels told Het Nieuwsblad. "He is not my teammate for nothing? Klaas immediately got a beautiful gap. Maybe I did not believe enough in the win so I am pretty happy with my second place. I will not move a bit up in the Superprestige standings. I am fifth, four points behind leader Sven Nys. We are only halfway through the series and a lot can still happen. Tom Meeusen was beaten by Belgian champion in the sprint for third. That was a shame."
