After that the previous stages had been decided in three sprints, the 4th stage of the Tour de Pologne had a different script.
The three attackers (Smukulis, Bodnar and Zielinski) who led from the early kilometers succeded in holding off the chase from the peloton, reaching the finish with 20″ on the group and fighting for the victory in a small sprint which was won by Bodnar.
The peloton tried to intensify the chase in the final part of the race, but the breakaway had a large maximum advantage of 11’20” and, in addition, most of the top sprinters had been dropped from the peloton on the last climb. Also the fast riders from Team LAMPRE-MERIDA, Bonifazio, Ferrari and Modolo, had been dropped from the peloton and despite having tried their best, they never made it back.
The first blue-fuchsia-green rider at the finish was Manuele Mori in 12th.
Thanks to the advantage on the bunch and the time bonues won in the intermediate sprints, Zielinski is the new leader of the overall classification, in which Ulissi is 41st at 36″.
