Richie Porte (Team Sky) was by far the strongest rider on today's mountaintop finish on Montagne di Lure in Paris-Nice. He arrived solo at the top to take an impressive stage victory and the overall lead with just two stages remaining.

With 1 km to the of Montagne de Lure in today's fifth stage of Paris-Nice Richie Porte put in a furious attack from a select lead group. In a matter of seconds he closed the gap to Denis Menchov (Katusha) who had been alone in the lead and pushed on alone. He arrived at the top 26 seconds ahead of the Russian veteran with a further 7 seconds back to GC leader Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Sharp) who won the sprint for third in a select group of favourites.

With the victory, Porte takes over the lead 32 seconds ahead of Talansky. With the final GC battle expected in Sunday's time trial up Col d'Eze and with Porte being one of the race's strongest in the race against the clock, he looks poised to take his biggest win of his career and his second stage race victory after his triumph in last year's edition of Volta ao Algarve.

An early break goes as Mount Ventoux' little sister looms in the background

The 176 km stage was the queen stage of the race, and with 5 categorized climbs in the lead up to the mountaintop finish the riders had to turn on their climbing legs when they took the start in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The early kilometers were covered at a furious speed with a number of attacks until Jens Voigt (Radioshack),         Paolo Longo Borghini (Cannondale), Thierry Hupond (Argos-Shimano) and Cyril Lemoine (Sojasun) finally escaped.

With Garmin-Sharp at the head of the peloton they were allowed to build up a gap of almost 7 minutes before the peloton increased its tempo. With Vansummeren and Howes doing much of the pace-setting the advantage was reduced to 4.20 with 38 km remaining.

With Montagne de Lure looming in the horizon, the battle for position ensued at the front of the peloton, and Garmin-Sharp were pushed away from the front by a number of teams. Vacansoleil for Westra, OmegaPharma-QuickStep for Chavanel and Velits, Blanco for Gesink, Orica-GreenEdge for Albasini and Lampre for Ulissi and Scarponi were all seen taking relays.

Coppel and Nieve crash

The high tempo resulted in a big crash which brought down outsiders Jerome Coppel (Cofidis) and Mikel Nieve (Euskaltel). A number of riders were held up by the crash, and most failed to regain contact with the front.

At the bottom of the climb Team Sky took over at the front where first Danny Pate and later Kanstantsin Siutsou upped the pace. The effect was immediate as a number of riders were dropped, and very soon the group had been reduced to contain under 40 riders. In the front Voigt dropped his companions who were all picked up by the favorites.

Voigt fought hard to hold on, but to no avail. As we was finally also caught, Davide Malacarne (Team Europcar) put in the first acceleration from the favourite group. He was unsuccessful, but his attack was the launch pad for a massive number of attacks. Most notably Michele Scarponi (Lampre-Merida) and yellow jersey Andrew Talansky were very active.

Porte gets away

Talansky's attacks were all covered by an incredibly strong Porte, and a group of just around 10 riders entered the final kilometers of the stage. Finally, an attack was successful as Denis Menchov launched up the road to open a decent gap.

With just 1 km left to race, Porte finally showed his strength by leaving all his rivals behind. He bridged the gap to Menchov who was unable to follow the Australian. Behind Talansky and Van Garderen tried to chase, but they continuously lost ground to the Team Sky rider ahead.

At the snow-covered top of the climb Porte took a convincing solo victory ahead of Menchov who just managed to hold off the favourite group which was led across the finish line by Talansky.

The race continues tomorrow with its longest stage, a 220 km trek from Manosque to Nice. Taking in some of hills near the Mediterranean coast, it is a hard affair, but with the top of the final climb 71,5 km from the finish it will be hard to make any difference in the GC. Instead it seems tailor made for opportunists, and a breakaway will have a good chance to go all the way to the finish line.
