Gianni Meersman (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) has entered this year's Volta a Catalunya in terrific form. Today he took his second consecutive stage victory by beating Daniele Ratto (Cannondale) and Brett Lancaster (Orica-GreenEdge) in a hard uphill sprint in Banyoles.

Gianni Meersman had been disappointed to leave Paris-Nice without repeating last year's stage win and entered this year's Volta a Catalunya with a firm focus on revenge. With another stage victory in today's second stage, it is mission accomplished for the talented Belgian.

Blanco had done most of the early pace-making to make sure that today's three man break was caught, and all was set for a mass sprint as the peloton entered the final part of the race. Meersman's teammate Andrew Fenn did an impressive job by leading the peloton for most of the final km on the difficult uphill finishing straight. Coming from behind, Meersman opened his sprint early to avoid getting boxed in, and he powered to the front with a few hundred metres to go. Daniele Ratto tried to pass the strong Belgian in the end, but missed a few centimetres and had to settle for second.

With his victory, Meersman extends his lead in the overall classification due to another 10 bonus seconds. He now leads Valerio Agnoli (Astana) by 14 seconds and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) by 16, but will struggle to defend his jersey in tomorrow's first of two consecutive mountaintop finishes.

3 riders head up the road

The stage was a 161 km trek from Girona to Banyoles. With only one 3rd category climb, it was always poised to be a day for the sprinters. The stage finished with 4 laps of a 9,2 km circuit in Banyoles. Crosswinds had been feared by some, but as it turned out to be another perfect day for bike racing the only challenge was the small climb inside the final km.

From the gun, the day's main escape headed up the road. Olivier Kaisen (Lotto-Belisol) and Christophe Laborie(Sojasun) were joined by Cristian Meier (Orica-GreenEdge) who had his second consecutive day in the day's breakaway. He made sure to cross the line first in the stage's intermediate sprints and was rewarded for his efforts by an extended lead in the sprints classification.

The sprinters had missed one of their few opportunities yesterday, and they were in no mood for another disappointment. Hence, the break was kept under tight control and only managed to build an advantage of around 3 minutes. Omega Pharma-Quick Step made sure to do the bulk of the early pace-making in a dual attempt to defend Meersman's leaders jersey and to set the Belgian up for another sprint win.

Blanco amass at the front

As the peloton approached the line to start the first of 4 laps on the finishing circuit, Blanco put Jack Bobridge on the front in an attempt to set up their sprinter Robert Wagner. As usual, Sky was very visible near the head of the peloton, and the British team made sure that team leader Bradley Wiggins was always in a safe position.

Blanco also asked Stef Clement to take on the pace-making, and with the battle for positions heating up the advantage of the breakaway crumbled. With 20 km to go, it was all back together, and a hectic run-in to the finish ensued.

The teams gathered their trains at the front while Blanco always kept the front positions. Bobridge and Clement used up their power and dropped off, and the Dutch team had little reserves left. They even had to sent lead-out man Jetse Bol and GC leader Robert Gesink to the front, but were finally assisted by Ag2r who looked to set up Samuel Dumoulin.

Burghardt attacks

Inside the final three kilometres Marcus Burghardt (BMC) attacked. He was joined by Polish champion Michal Golas (Omega Pharma-Quick Step), a Cannondale and a Vacansoleil rider. With Golas protecting Meersman's lead and so unwilling to work, the break was caught, and Wagner's final lead-out man Moreno Hofland hit the front inside the final two kilometres.

He did an amazing turn on the front, but as he finished his job, team sprinter Wagner hit the front way too early. Fenn dug deep to keep the pace up for Meersman who finally opened a long sprint to power clear and secure his second victory in his new team colours.

You can follow Meersman's struggle in the high mountains and the first big favourite battle tomorrow on CyclingQuotes.com/live. Starting at 15.15, we bring you all the action from the first of two decisive stages.
