On the 17,4 km course of the 2nd stage of Giro d'Italia, Scarponi's team recorded the 6th fastest time, 22” behind Sky's winning performance, but the Lampre-Merida team, consisting mainly of riders noted for their abilities on uphill climbs, will gain a significant confidence boost by besting expected specialist teams such as Garmin (+3”) and Bmc (+13”).
Afterwards team leader Scarponi, who is now 23rd overall 22” behind Puccio (Sky), was more than pleased with the performance of the team, especially the way they managed to overcome some difficulties midway through a demanding TTT.
“I'm very satisfied, my teammates and I rode an amazing team time trial,” Scarponi commented after the team had performed better than expected on Sunday. “The course was demanding and it was very difficult to manage the team's automatisms but we magnificently succeeded in doing it. We had a tough moment in the central part of the stage, when we were only five riders left, then, during the latter parts of the stage, Cattaneo was great in pushing hard until the finish line.”
