A great Giuseppe Fonzi was protagonist in the first stage of Tour de l’Eurometropole. The Italian tried his luck together with 7 riders 30 km from the finish line in a late attack.
The advantage of Fonzi’s group was always around 25 to 30 seconds until an acceleration of Lotto Soudal brought back the peloton whose sprint was won by Jens Debusschere.
Tomorrow's stage will be harder with a few climbs in the final circuit of Roubaix.
“At 30 km from the finish line the early breakaway was caught so I decided to counterattack with 7 riders. Thanks to this the team could race covered in the main bunch. Unluckily we were caught with 7km to go but I feel good so I promise that I’ll try again in the next days."
