As it is still to be determined whether la Pompeiana climb will feature in this year’s Milan-San Remo route, it was recently announced that the courses of two other Italian early-season races, Roma Maxima and Strade Bianche, are under a threat of being changed due to landslides.

It was recently announced that the descent following the Pompeiana climb is currently closed due to a landslide and that the road will not be repaired in time for Milan-San Remo. It was also reported that the quality of a road surface covering the ascent might be insufficient to be negotiated by the professional cyclist this part of the year.

The race organizers, RCS Sport expressed their great interest in carrying out this season’s edition of the race with the newly rearranged route, but now their two other flagship events are under the similar threat due to the massive landslides in Lazio and Tuscany, caused by abnormally humid winter in Italy this year.

As it was reported on tuttobiciweb, part of the Strade Bianche route is currently closed due to a landslide in Castelnuevo Beradenga and it is very likely that the same circumstances will force local authorities to close the roads the Roma Maxima will traverse.

The final decision about the possibility of applaying changes to the Strade Bianche and Roma Maxima routes will be made on Thursday, as the RCS Sport’s technical director Mauro Vegni is said to held a meeting at the Prefecture in Imperia.

"The situation is very difficult, but I still believe," Vegni said.

As the eventual deviation from the original route will slightly lighten the Roma Maxima and Strade Bianche, the issue concerning la Pompeiana climb in Milan-San Remo seemingly has more serious impact as one of the most decisive parts of its course, certainly defining a nature of the race.
