With the World Championships set to take place outside of Europe in 2015 and 2016, the UCI is considering to organize a separate team time trial Worlds. The costs of transporting equipment, riders and staff over long distances may prevent many teams from lining up at the event.
The International Cycling Union UCI is investigating whether the World Championships Team Time trial should be held as a separate event for the next two years. In 2015, the Road World Championships will take place in the American city of Richmond while the battle for the rainbow jersey will take place in Qatar in 2016.
Several teams have contacted UCI to inform them that the additional cost of having a Worlds team time trial on a different continent amounts to 35,000 euros. It is quite expensive to transport the team, staff and special equipment over such long distances. They fear that only a few top team will make the long journey to get involved in the fight for the golbal title.
Several locations have already shown interest in organizing a World Championships team time tria. This includes the Limburg province where there first Worlds TTT was held in 2012. Back then, Omega Pharma-Quick Step and Specialized-Lululemon took the maiden titles on the famous ascent of Cauberg. Limburg has already been in preliminary discussion with the UCI about the possibibility of hosting the event.
BMC and Specialized-Lululemon are the reigning world champions.
