Eusebio Unzue, general manager of Movistar Team, revealed after the presentation of the Vuelta a Espana last Saturday in Santiago de Compostela that Alejandro Valverde could do all three grand tours in 2016. He is already set for his Giro d'Italia debut.

"It's a big change. It was not fair that someone like him did not know a race like the Giro d'Italia," he told Marca. “As versatile as he is, you can always count on him wherever he goes, and he confirmed that last year reaching the podium at the Tour. We cannot expect more. Honestly, I looked at is a moral debt that a riders with so many years in this profession did not know one of the big races."

"With the project we want to take on the Giro, we made a slight variation in his calendar which is more focused on one-day race. We'll see what happens," he continued before adding. "Sometimes programs are designed in a certain way but then it turns out differently. At the moment, the idea is that Alejandro will not be at the Vuelta."

According to Unzue, Valverde could do both the Tour and the Tour of Poland but has opted for the French race to prepare for the Olympics, one of their biggest goals of the season.

Marca asked Unzué if he saw Alejandro Valverde doing all grand tours this year. And the answer was significant: “I have no doubt that he’s capable of doing it,” he said. “I think it’s a question of what we demand, and what he demands of himself, without overdoing it. He’s crazy about his profession … and, well, he’s already insinuated it. He is certainly a man who can handle challenges of all kinds, classics and grand tours."
