In the finale of the Belgian road race championships, Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) tried bridge the gap to Jürgen Roelandts and Preben Van Hecke. He seemed to succeed until the gap stabilized at around 6 seconds. In the end, he had to settle for third place.
"It seemed to go smoothly, but then I suddenly not got any further. I always did aboutu four hundred watts but I did not get closer to Van Hecke and Roelandts. It was Ben Hermans who set me up perfectly on the climb. The other candidates for the winlike Tom Boonen, Sep Vanmarcke and so on joined me," he told Het Nieuwsblad.
"Later I saw my chance to go alone and try to join the leaders. I failed to do so. From the start, there were 25 riders in the break. Right away you know that it will be a difficult day and a difficult race. Etixx-Quick-Step and Wanty Groupe Gobert did some work, but that proved not to be sufficient. I'm glad my training buddy got the title."
