Kenny van Hummel has ended his career as a professional cyclist. The 32-year old rider has not been able to find a new team for 2015 after his contract with Androni-Giocattoli.
“Unfortunately I have to conclude that I have not been able to find a team, at a respectable level, who is willing to offer me a contract for the 2015 season”, the sprinter told NuSport.
“Therefore, I have decided to end my career immediately.”
Van Hummel participated twice in the Tour de France, but never reached Paris.
In 2009 he became a cult-figure after he rode alone behind the peleton for several days, but managed to finish just within the time limit. Eventually, his courageous effort came to an end due to an heavy crash.
Van Hummel won 28 races in his career. His most successful years were in 2009 and 2010, when he won 12 races, including the Dutch Food Valley Classic, a stage in the Tour of Belgium and four stages in the Tour of Hainan.
In 2014, he won stages in the Tour of Venezuela, Langkawi and Azerbeidzjan
