According to the Italian media, the 100th edition of the Giro d'Italia will start in Sardinia. RCS Sport cycling director Mauro Vegni told CyclingWeekly that this edition will take the Grand Tour over the race’s iconic climbs (Plan de Corones, Monte Zoncolan, Cime di Lavaredo, Mortirolo/Stelvio and Colle dell Finestre).
"We want to maintain a modern Giro with minimum transfers, but bring in elements from the past", Vegni explained. "We want to give attention to all of Italy, but clearly, we can’t touch all 20 regions unfortunately. We are going to hit as many as we can."
After a start in Sardinia, the peloton will take a flight to reach Sicily before continuing up through the boot via Calabria.
Vegni added that he would like to have the best riders at the start of his race. "It’s never easy to put all the favourites together in a Grand Tour. The goal would be to do so next year because it’s a special year given how it’s the 100th edition of the Giro."
