Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) was agonizingly close to his first win of the season when he was beaten by Thibaut Pinot in the summit finish on stage 1 of the Tour du Gevaudan.
"We had Romain Guillemois in the break, it's always good to have someone in front," sports director Ismael Mottier told Directvelo. "Then we knew that the other teams had to control and the breakaway was caught at the bottom of the penultimate climb.
"On a stage like this, you quickly see if you have good legs. This was the case from Thomas Voeckler who had a good day. Our stagiaire Romain Guyot nearly made it to the top with the leaders, he did not miss much. In the end, we just had Thomas in the first group and he lost on the line by 10 or 20 centimeters. Inevitably, he is disappointed. He went deep as it was a very difficult day."
