Team Katusha and Russian National Team rider Anton Vorobyev took an impressive result in the individual time trial of the UCI World Road Championships in Ponferrada, Spain.

Today, at the distance of 47,1 km fighting with the best riders in the world, Anton Vorobyev finished 8th, only 1 minute and 29 seconds behind the new World Champion, Olympic Champion of London-2012 Bradley Wiggins from Great Britain and Team Sky.

“The race was really hard, but it was impossible to wait for something else. First part of the route was more powerful, while the decisive was the second half of the distance with the tough climb and descent. I had a plan for the race and I tried to follow it completely. I tried to divide the distance in parts and to hold the planned rhythm. Here I got some help from my experience at the Russian Championships where the distance of the time trial also was of 50 km,” Vorobyev told the Katusha website.

“From the technical side I am happy with the way I did the race. I think I’ve got the maximum possible result for today. Maybe, in some way I missed racing days, I wanted to get a better result, but the final placement is not bad at all. This is my first experience at the Elite World Championships, and I hope this experience will help me in the future to achieve even better results, - explained Anton Vorobyev, the 2014 Russian ITT Champion,” he finished.

Undoubtedly today’s result is a big step ahead for Anton who will turn 24 next October, and solid proof that he is headed the right way in his professional development.

Last time it was Vladimir Gusev who brought a Top-10 placement to Russia in the individual time trial of World Championships: in was 7 years ago in 2007 when Gusev was 6th.

Silver medal in today’s race went to three-time ITT World Champion Tony Martin from Germany and Omega Pharma – Quick-Step, who lost 26 seconds to Wiggins. Bronze is for Tom Dumoulin from Netherlands and Giant-Shimano, who finished 40 seconds behind the Champion.
