Zico Waeytens sprinted third on stage 4 of the Ster ZLM Toer, as Dutchman Moreno Hofland was the fastest on the uphill finish at La Gileppe.
With start and finish in Belgium, the queen stage in the Ster ZLM Toer Gp Jan van Heeswijk went through the Ardennes from Verviers to La Gileppe. With a lot of climbing along the 186.7km, six riders escaped in early stages of the race.
At 16km to the line everything got back together and the bunch moved towards the uphill finish on La Gileppe. With a powerfull sprint, Moreno Hofland (Team LottoNL-Jumbo) won the fourth stage, as Wayetens took third - a great performance by the talented Belgian.
“It’s a dream for me to ride in this team in the WorldTour, to see that they go for my chance is even greater and I wanted to take this opportunity to show a nice result obviously,” said Zico Waeytens.
“The team did an excellent job and put me into position at the foot of the final climb. Too bad that I was hindered by some riders in the final 100 meters otherwise even more was possible. But I am very happy with both this result and my shape.”
After the stage, coach Marc Reef said: “Our plan was to join the early breakaway in case of a large group and from that position see how the race would develop and go for Zico in the sprint.”
“A small group of 6 attacked, which was a good scenario for us, since enough other team were interested in chasing. Our aim in the finale was to use the whole team to put Zico into the right position before the final ascent started and that worked out well.”
