Team Sky manager Dave Brailsford stated last month that they are closely cooperating with Bradley Wiggins on rider’s contract extension, trying to find a solution which will support his road and track ambitions in best possible way. According to The Guardian, instead of continuing struggles to find his place in the same squad with Chris Froome, the Olympic champion from London may lead the new development unit formed to back young British talents.

Brailsford explained that prolonged negotiations with Wiggins were due to complicated nature of his contract for next to seasons, which should support both his ambitions in regards to racing on the road and chasing his next Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro. According to The Guardian, parties are still closely cooperating in order to find the best possible solution and taking a leadership role in the new Sky development team is seen as one way of securing his future in cycling.

“We’re still discussing ways of supporting Brad’s Olympic ambitions in Rio, but [which] would also explore the fantastic developmental opportunities which could exist in order to support the next Bradley Wiggins,” said Team Sky’s head, Dave Brailsford.

“We’re looking at that from various different angles, and there are positive opportunities which I am sure we can make happen.”

Also British Cycling’s Performance head, Shane Sutton, who closely supported Wiggins on earlier steps of his career was positive about such possibility.

“There’s no better opportunity for a rider to be given the chance to follow in the footsteps of Sir Brad. I’m not sure what his plans are, I don’t think anything is set is stone.”

“Sir Bradley is under contract to Team Sky and negotiations for next year are ongoing,” said a spokesman for his management agency XIX. “There will be no announcement on his 2015 race calendar until October at the earliest.”
